Blown away by the glacier Perito Moreno

An exceptional natural beauty. One of Argentina’s most popular tourist attractions. The most famous glacier in Patagonia, and one of the most accessible ice fields in the world.

The “Glaciar Perito Moreno” is located far south in Argentina, in the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, a remote and harsh weather area declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here you find great granite mountain peaks exceeding 3000 m.a.s.l., with magic Magellanic forest surrounding it, Patagonian steppe, and specialized high-altitude vegetation.

The glacier stands like a majestic wall 60 meters above the cold waters of Lake Argentino. It has 170 meters of ice hidden underneath the water surface, and it is constantly moving it’s 30 km long icefield. To see the glacier there are almost 4000 meter of steel catwalks to stroll. Amazingly the glacier looks different for every 50 meters you walk, also delicately impacted by the shadow shifts of the sun, and the closer you get, the more of the bright blue ice lights up between the white.

Quite often, massive icebergs crack off the glacier face and fall into the lake. The sound is priceless when it thunders like a lightning storm. Because the glacier blocks a channel formed by the lake, the water level temporarily raises and an ice-bridge forms until it explodes into the lake every 4 years.

To get to the glacier you need to get to the closest town, El Calafate, first. This special tourist meeting point is some 80 km from the glacier. You can either book a tour with a bus, hitch-hike or rent your own car.
